For years, I've seen UX diagrams and discussions that place accessibility squarely under the User Interface (UI) phase of design. The assumption is that accessibility is only about color contrast, font sizes, and visual polish. But treating UI as the primary or only place to think about accessibility leaves most of the work untouched. Accessibility isn't a checklist you apply at the end of a project. It's a holistic design practice. It starts long before a screen is ever styled, rooted in the structure, the effort, and the evidence that shape an experience.

If we want to build products that are truly inclusive, we need to look at the entire UX process.

Where accessibility lives in the UX process

1. The Foundation: Information Architecture (IA)

Information Architecture is the foundation of any digital product. When it comes to accessibility, a product is shaped by the structure underneath the interface—not by the lipstick and sparkle of the visual design.

IA determines how people find, understand, and move through an experience, making it one of the most important accessibility tools we have. Good IA reduces cognitive load, creates predictable pathways, and helps people build a mental model they can trust.

You can see its impact in everyday design decisions:

  • Clear hierarchies help screen reader users understand where they are.
  • Logical grouping reduces cognitive effort for users with ADHD or memory challenges.
  • Consistent patterns help everyone anticipate what comes next.
  • Straightforward navigation supports older adults who may experience memory changes or slower processing.

When IA is weak, no amount of UI polish can fix the experience. But when IA is strong, accessibility becomes a natural outcome.

2. The Logic: Taxonomy

If IA is the structure, taxonomy is the logic behind it. It's the layer inside IA that teams skip most often, yet it quietly shapes how people understand an experience.

Taxonomy is how we group, classify, and label information. Think about shopping for shoes online: you immediately look for categories like color, gender, style, brand, or size. Those groupings are the taxonomy. They make the experience intuitive because they match how people naturally think.

When a taxonomy is weak, it creates friction. A user might click into a category that doesn't contain what they expected, forcing them to reread labels or bounce between sections. For many, that's just annoying. For users with disabilities, it becomes a barrier.

Strong taxonomies shape accessibility through:

  • Label clarity: Users shouldn't have to guess what something is called.
  • Content grouping: Related things should actually live together.
  • Findability: Crucial for screen reader users navigating by headings or landmarks.
  • Recognition: Familiar, predictable terms reduce memory strain, especially for older adults.

Taxonomies aren't academic; they are practical. Users see the labels, but the underlying logic is the part of accessibility everyone feels.

3. The Mechanics: Interaction Design

If IA is the foundation, interaction design is the behavior. It's the moment-to-moment experience of using a product—the decisions, pathways, feedback loops, and micro-behaviors that either support a user or trip them up.

Good interaction design creates momentum; bad interaction design creates friction. It is governed by foundational laws of human behavior:

  • Hick's Law: More choices equal more cognitive effort. Too many choices result in no good choices.
  • Fitts's Law: Big, close targets are easy to hit; small, far targets demand precision and effort.

These aren't just visual issues; they are human-behavior issues that directly influence accessibility. Reducing choices supports users with cognitive fatigue. Predictable pathways help screen reader users. Larger tap targets support people with motor impairments.

When you look at these patterns together, a clear truth emerges: Most accessibility barriers are interaction design barriers in disguise. Accessibility lives in the mechanics of the taps, the choices, the recoveries.

4. The Truth: User Research

If IA sets the structure and interaction design shapes the effort, user research is where accessibility becomes real. It's where assumptions get humbled and patterns get clarified.

Conducting research with people with disabilities isn't "edge case" research. It's simply research done with the full range of people who use your product.

Research reveals what teams don't see on their own:

  • Navigation breakdowns that only appear when someone uses a screen reader.
  • Cognitive overload moments for users with memory challenges.
  • Motor effort barriers like the reality of tapping a tiny target with limited dexterity.
  • Language and comprehension gaps affecting multilingual users.

Research is where you see the real humans behind the heuristics. It's where accessibility stops being a checklist and becomes a design practice grounded in evidence, empathy, and iteration. The more time you spend watching real people use a product, the more apparent it becomes that accessibility isn't something we add. It's something we notice.

5. The Visibility: User Interface (UI) Design

This brings us to UI. I saved it for last because it gets the most attention and the most misconceptions.

UI does not "create" accessibility. It "exposes" the decisions made earlier.

The visual layer still plays a vital role. Color, contrast, typography, spacing, target areas, and feedback all influence how someone perceives and operates a product. But the interface cannot repair foundational issues. Unclear structure stays unclear no matter how well the screen is styled. Confusing flows remain confusing. Missing research does not get replaced by visual polish.

The interface is where accessibility becomes visible, not where it begins. The decisions made upstream determine what the interface can communicate and how well it supports the people using it.
