Not intentionally, but in the quiet ways that show up when teams assume every user has the same vision, dexterity, memory, or confidence with digital interfaces. I've sat next to my mom while she tries to fill out a form, find a product on a website, or complete a simple task that should take seconds but somehow takes minutes or even hours. None of the friction she hits is about her ability. It's about the design.
It's not a niche problem
This isn't an edge case; it is a fundamental shift in who we are designing for. Roughly 36% of the U.S. population is 50 or older, and age-related changes start much earlier than most designers realize. Around age 40, contrast sensitivity begins to decline. Small text becomes harder to focus on. Glare becomes more uncomfortable. These shifts happen long before anyone considers themselves "old." Yet, we continue to design as if everyone has perfect 20/20 vision and lightning-fast processing speed.
The Visible Patterns that Create Friction
When you watch someone with different cognitive, motor, or sensory patterns try to use a product, specific design failures become glaringly obvious.
Here are the most common barriers older adults face:
- Complex navigation: Increases cognitive load for users who process information more slowly.
- Unpredictable pathways: Make it harder to build a mental model and stay oriented within the system.
- Small tap targets: Create motor barriers for users with reduced dexterity or tremors.
- Dense, crowded content: Overwhelms users who benefit from clearer hierarchy and generous spacing.
- Low contrast & tiny text: Become nearly illegible as contrast sensitivity and near-focus decline.
- Glare-heavy designs: Strain users who become increasingly sensitive to bright backgrounds and white space with age.

The invisble barrier: cognitive load
While visual and motor barriers are tangible, there is an invisible barrier that impacts older adults profoundly: Cognitive Load.
As we age, working memory capacity and processing speed naturally change. This doesn't mean older adults can't use technology; it means the "cost" of using poorly designed technology is significantly higher.
Here is how cognitive load manifests in everyday digital experiences:
1. Recognition over recall
Relying on recall instead of recognition forces users to hold information in their working memory. As age-related memory changes occur, this becomes exponentially harder.
The Problem: Hidden menus, unlabeled icons, and inconsistent terminology force users to remember what something does rather than simply recognizing it.
The Fix: Use clear, descriptive labels. Keep navigation visible. Maintain consistent patterns so users don't have to relearn the interface every time they return.
2. The paradox of choice
Too many options equal paralysis. Older adults may take longer to evaluate choices due to slower processing speeds, making dense decision points overwhelming.
The Problem: Presenting 20 filter options, 8 pricing tiers, or endless content cards creates decision fatigue. Users either give up or make suboptimal choices out of exhaustion.
The Fix: Prioritize and limit choices. Use progressive disclosure to reveal complexity only when needed. Default to the most common path.
3. Interruptions & recovery
How easily can a user get back on track after a distraction? Younger users might bounce back instantly; older users may lose their place entirely.
